Winter will be winding down soon, and we will begin seeing signs of Spring. While it’s still chilly outside, take some time to check off the home maintenance items below to keep your home functioning at it’s best!
Clean your exhaust fans.
Kitchen exhaust fans help remove steam and odors when you’re cooking. They should be cleaned monthly to avoid grease buildup.
If the grille on your bathroom exhaust fan is clogged with dust, try a trick that’s faster and more effective than vacuuming. Here’s how to clean a bathroom fan: Turn on the fan and blast out the dust with “canned air.” The fan will blow the dust outside.
This works on the return air grilles of your central heating/cooling system too. Run the system so that the return airflow will carry the dust to the filter.
You’ll find canned air at home centers and hardware stores, usually in the electrical supplies aisle.
Check Air Filters
This is a great time to check your air filters – especially if you have pets. Depending on your furnace model, filters need to be changed every 1-3 months.
Inspect and clean dryer vent.
Cleaning the duct that connects the back of your dryer to the outside vent won’t only improve the unit’s efficiency, it can prevent a house fire caused by lint buildup. Purchase a dryer vent cleaning kit and tackle the project in one afternoon.
Vacuum refrigerator coils.
One little-known fact about your refrigerator is that cleaning the condenser coils located in the back or bottom of the appliance will save energy and keep it in prime working condition.
Some other “To-do List” items to tackle this month:
Get organized for tax time.
Declutter + organize your master bedroom.
Declutter your medicine cabinet.
Schedule your annual doctor’s exam.
Organize your linen closet.
Outfit your vehicle(s) with an emergency kit.
